What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a “talking” treatment that addresses psychological and emotional suffering.  People who want to make genuine and significant changes in their lives—whether to alter behaviour, overcome depression or grief, manage unpleasant emotions, or understand themselves better—often choose psychotherapeutic treatment.  It’s based on the idea that feelings and thoughts we’re not aware of are the root cause of our problems–including depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem, and unsatisfactory relationships.

By talking about what’s happening inside your mind, you begin to see patterns of behaviour on the outside that you may wish to change.

What kinds of problems can a psychotherapist help me with?

If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, family or work difficulties, or if you simply wish to improve the quality of your emotional and mental life, psychotherapy may be the treatment of choice.

How long does psychotherapy last?

While some problems can be addressed in a handful of sessions, psychotherapy generally lasts many months and sometimes many years, depending on your goals and individual circumstances.

The lasting benefits of psychotherapy are the result of many hours of therapy. It takes time to develop a deep, trusting relationship with a therapist; it takes time to explore and bring into memory a lifetime of hurts and hidden emotions.  It takes time to make the changes that improve the quality of our lives.
